What is Mathematics or Math?
There are a lot of definitions about mathematics. The American Heritage Dictionary defines Mathematics as the study of the measurement, properties, and relationships of quantities, using numbers and symbols. Webster's Dictionary defines mathematics as the science of numbers and their operations, interrelations, combinations, generalizations, and abstractions and of space configurations and their structure, measurement, transformations, and generalizations. Whatever or however they define Mathematics or Math, simply put, it is made up of rules or ideas that have been accepted as truth through tests and converted into formulas that can be simply followed with an expected end result.

Why do we have to learn Mathematics?
You have to learn Mathematics because it is used in many other areas, subjects or sciences such as biology, physics, chemistry, psychology, sociology, economics, business, engineering, computers, communications and almost all other fields and industries. That alone will force you to learn Mathematics.
How should we study Mathematics?
Roger Bacon, a philosopher and scientist said that, "All science requires Mathematics. The knowledge of mathematical things is almost innate in us... This is the easiest of sciences, a fact which is obvious in that no one's brain rejects it; for laymen and people who are utterly illiterate know how to count and reckon."
You should be actively involved in studying Math inside and outside the classroom or at home. Constant practice is a good way to study Math and using Math games or other fun Math activities are excellent ways of studying and learning Mathematics.
What concepts should preschoolers learn in Math?
Concepts such as counting numbers, number sequences and one-to-one association or matching are the most important concepts that preschoolers should learn in Math. What concepts should primary students learn in Math?
Primary students learn, aside from enhancing their counting numbers, number sequences and matching skills, they also need to learn the basic concepts of addition and subtraction, telling time, place values and initial skills in conversion to Roman Numerals.
What concepts should elementary students learn in Math?
Elementary students as a whole should be able to learn, aside from the basic addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, working with fractions, algebraic equations, problem solving and basic geometry.
Do I need a tutor to learn Math?
If you feel that even with the available tools both tangible and online you have not yet improved your Math skills then a tutor might be needed. But, a word of advice, you can download as much drills or practice sets from the internet and ask the questions you need to ask to be able to refine your Math skills through online websites like this that a tutor would not be needed in the long run. Practice and active participation is important in order to learn Math the fast, fun and easy way.
Why are we afraid of Mathematics?
One probable reason why you are afraid of Math is because you started learning Math on the wrong foot. Some children in the past were taught that they have to learn Math early because they will have a hard time once they started school. The misconception brought fears to children then. Nowadays, Math activities, tips and tricks are available online and on paper and lots of games and fun activities are already available to help stimulate and promote Math skills such as board games and puzzles.
As a parent, how can I help my kids in learning Math?
The best way to help your kids learn Math is to start at home with basic Math activities like teaching them how to divide or share food among themselves or with their playmates, having them run errands for you so that they will be able to compute change as against the amount you gave and the amount they paid for or have them help you in measuring ingredients for baking a cake or muffin. There are endless ways you can create that will help your kids to learn Math without them even knowing it.
As a teacher, how can I show my students that Math is not something to be feared?
Fear of Math usually start from past failures that your students have encountered and to show your students that Math is not something to be feared you will have to devise ways to explain to them the various concepts as simply as possible and as easy for them to understand. When I was in grade school we did not have Mathematics, we had Arithmetic. What is the difference between Arithmetic and Mathematics?
Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics dealing with the basics of computation such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and anything to do with positive numbers and calculations while Mathematics includes arithmetic, geometry, algebra, trigonometry and other branches that all deal with patterns and structures and the application of logic.

If you are looking for way to make learning abacus math easier for your kids, then you've come to the right place. Specifically, we will talk about the different games you can play with your kids that promote mental math, the "child psychology" that you need to apply so your kids will enjoy their time learning mental math.
By the end of this article, you would have an easier time planning your "strategies" to liven up your kid's experience in learning mental math.

It is not every day that a child would accept their parent's decision to enrol them in a class that would help them in learning mental arithmetic. First of all, not everyone knows abacus math - so why learn it, right? Secondly, learning mental math can be draining and tedious at times. Then again, if you found a great mental mathematics course, you don't have to worry about that.
But the fact remains that studying mental arithmetic for kids will be a second or third or perhaps a last choice for kids. They want to play. They want to be kids. You can make learning abacus math fun and easy.
Why is your child studying mental arithmetic? To get higher grades in math? Good idea. Is it to make them geniuses? Definitely.
But no matter what reason your child has for studying mental arithmetic, one thing is for sure: their lives has just gotten easier. As we all grow up, we realize that math is something we have to deal with every day. And your kids won't have a problem with that when they are learning mental math at an early age.
So now, to help your kids in learning abacus math, you should constantly show them how "real world" mental math is. Give them daily scenarios where their talent in mental math would resurface.
You should also try to incorporate technology to make math easy. Download iPhone apps or different mobile and PC games that makes use of math in one way or the other.
Another way to make math fun is to play games with them that would demand some "thinking" from their part. Sudoku, math-based detective game and many more. Be creative!
Lastly, when your kids are learning mental arithmetic, you should never run out of encouraging words for them. Compliment them for the littlest of achievement. When you constantly remind your kids that they are good at something, sooner or later, they will believe that too!

Know criteria
This means knowing what the key areas of assessment are and the proportion of marks for each question. Look at your course guide and talk to your teachers to find out this information, so as to allocate the right amount of time in the exam and for exam preparation. From this information you should be able to map out what you need to be focusing on and which questions needs more time. Knowing the criteria and study questions will give you a basic orientation to excel in college exams.

Revise
It is a good idea to start revision at least two weeks before the examination. Participate in study groups to better understand what is required and revise the key areas more effectively. Learn specific areas to be assessed to teach to your study group. This will minimize the time you spend revising and orient you in the best way for the exam. Meet with your study group as often as you can.... once every 3-4 days is a good start but it does depend on your learning style and study preferences.
Create a cheat sheet approximately 1-1.5 pages in length, so as get the bare essentials of the examination area. Remember to be concise in preparing your cheat sheet. It should only jog your memory and orient you in study. How you design and adapt your cheat sheet should depend on your study style.

Practice
Practice exams are vital in making the best of your ability and revision sessions. Do practice exams in real time so as to practice under the time and stress conditions of the actual event. Be sure to go over your practice exams to review areas of concern.

Differentiated Instruction
It's been a known fact for some time that certain teaching methods just don't click with certain students. How is a teacher supposed to meet the specialized needs of twenty or thirty different students, though? Furthermore, how can an elementary math intervention program be effective if it doesn't address a student's unique problems and needs? One way to get around the problem is by turning to specialized online math games. The best games offer differentiated instruction that assesses a student's weaknesses and strengths and adapts game play accordingly. These games have been shown to make a profound difference for students who are having a hard time with mathematics.

The Benefits of Adaptive Learning
In addition to assessing a student's strengths and weaknesses, a high-quality online math game will adapt according to those things. If a student is experiencing problems with a specific mathematical concept, for example, this type of game will present problems and scenarios that improve confidence and provide alternative ways for a student to arrive at the right answer. If one method doesn't work, this type of game can present different options for the student to consider.

Virtual Manipulatives
At the elementary-school level, students often struggle with understanding basic math concepts. Well-designed online math games incorporate virtual manipulatives that can make a major different. In this situation, a student is able to virtually manipulate objects to form a clearer understanding of a basic math concept. This approach is recommended for a successful elementary math intervention program, but it isn't always easy to achieve in a classroom setting. The right game can provide a unique opportunity to teach a student in a whole new way.
The goal of a well-executed elementary math program is to prevent students from failing or from falling too far behind in their mathematical studies. If students are allowed to move up to higher grades without gaining a clear understanding of math fundamentals, they could be in for trouble throughout the rest of their school careers. There are many advantages to including online math games in the classroom. They don't have to be strictly used for struggling students, but they definitely provide unique benefits in that regard. Jim Wheelin writes about many different educational topics for parents, kids and teachers. He has helped many struggling students to find the best elementary math intervention program to meet their needs. Jim also encourages other to test educational games such as the ones offered at http://www.dreambox.com/math-intervention.
